Hi, so who here besides Kimberly and Kim being my wife we finally told TV providers
certain terms "we are no longer taking their Bull Shit?" IN short, who has cut the cord
and signed up for live streaming packages. We are running with direct TV on an
apple TV 4th Gen, so far so good. Does Direct TV now have its short comings? Yes,
no DDR cloud yet, coming 2017 and The menus could use some love. HOwever,
finally my apple TV can be come a live streaming device "TV"."
The only thing I don't like about live streaming devices is that they're a minute or so behind regular programs. At least, that's been my general experience. Fix that problem, and honestly I'd love it. I know it's probably not that huge a deal in the grand scheme of things, but well, I kind of want to receive my content as fast as the person who is watching it on a regular TV using a receiver provided by the cable company.
your correct here but did not want to pay for a box. I got tired of having a apple tv and no actual live streaming tv.
Well, I have an Apple TV 4th generation, too. I'm trying to figure out how to type on the new remote. Do I have to flick through all the letters, or can I use the touch surface? Also, if the Apple TV 4th generation is jailbroken, you can get a lot of content through Popcorn Time. Popcorn Time is relatively accessible, but Kodi is not at all. I was very disappointed by this frankly. So, if I want more add-ons, I have to get a sighted person to help me search for them. Has anyone ever heard of Live Wire Plus? Honestly, it seems like a better deal than Direct TV, as you pay 6 months at a time. I haven't signed up for it, but am considering it. I'm trying to see what other content I can get with my Apple TV first. Then, there is U.S. TV now.
You can dictate verbally on the Apple TV.
I use Netflix (Canadian mind you) and Kodi (which is not even remotely accessible, but luckily I see well enough that it isn't a huge issue). I'd cut the cord in a heartbeat, but my wife still likes to have cable. I generally don't watch much tv anyway. THough Nteflix originals are often worth a look I've found. And they're also getting better about audio description. That's not a must for me, but it sure does help.
Yes, I know you can dictate on Apple TV, but how do you type letters? Thanks.
You can flick left or right through the keyboard. When you find the letter you want
click the the touch pad to insert letters.
There is a screen reader for Kodi, but most people including myself can't get it working on the latest version, that being 17.1.
I'm still using version 16.1 until the developer of the addon can find the time to fix things.
Luckily most of the addons I use still work with my version.
Kodi is complicated. I'm still not entirely sure I know how it works. it "does" work, but I've got no idea how I made it happen.
My suggestion for typing using Apple TV is to download the apple TV remote app on your phone or other iDevice (if you have one). When you need to type anything, the app will generally launch a keyboard on your phone which is similar to the standard keyboard that it launches for all other applications. Type what you need to, then hit done, and do the rest.
Okay, thanks. Yes, I have tried to install Kodi for Windows, plus the screen reader. I got a Windows installer for the Kodi screen reader, but it does not work. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
I don't have cable at my apartment. I did put up an antenna to catch news broadcasts and sports and have had good luck with it. New digital channels have multiple broadcasts simultaneously. As an example, my main network channels have a few sub channels that show movies and old reruns of classic tv programs. I would say that I get about 15 channels in total over the antenna. I also picked up one of the Ibiquity hd radios. Many of the FM stations around here have am and other channels as digital sub channels which makes it easy to catch sports that I can't get on tv and other talk programs. We also have some digital sub channels that play commercial free music.
Really? I just get the old programs reruns. Interesting that you can get sports. Wish they had a weather channel on antenna tv. I think it depends on what the hook up on the roof of the building can pick up.
Does anyone have FirTV with Alexa? I'm wondering if Alexa actually reads your choices, or just responds to voice command.
Fire TV does have a screen reader called voice view, which has its own little bag of tricks. You activate it by holding down the back button and the menu button for a few seconds, and it will walk you through a tutorial for the first time. Alexa is pretty much just Apple's version of Siri, and Voice view is the Amazon's version of Voiceover. Note: voiceview is still a work in progress, but it's not too bad for now.
I use DirectTv Now in combination with a TV Guide app. I don't get the big networks live which is a little sucky. I can't use my DirectTv Now to log into the NBC and ABC apps, which makes sense if they don't have licensing for those networks. Good thing I know someone with a real TV subscription!
The app is fairly accessible, though I wish the, "What's on now" screen would tell me the name of the show instead of just season and episode number/title. Otherwise, I like it well enough. It meets my TV needs. I got in on the $35 promo for the big plan, so it's worth it for me. SlingTV was an accessibility nightmare. The website for DirectTV Now isn't the greatest. It definitely takes some work if you want to watch on the PC.
I don't want to pay for anything, as there are plenty of legal ways to watch free tv. One is via a TV antenna. The other is using Kodi. Of course, Kodi keeps crashing in Win 10 after installing the screen reader. All I get is 2 beeps, the screen reader tries to talk, and the program closes. Not sure what is up. I imagine not many people use it here judging by the lack of replies. If you know someone who has cable, you can also use a Slingbox, too.
Thanks Madog. That was helpful. Do you know off hand if the Fire TV stick also has the screen reader? It is a lot cheaper than regular Fire TV.
my issue or urksome journey start with owning an apple TV 4th gen but no real
way to stream live TV. Well not true, it I install a few apps that will let you. So
after hearing direct TV now, I am running with the the 75 dollar plan. If this does
not work I'll try dish.

Yes, I'm fairly sure that voice view also does come with the fire stick, so you should be fine if you want to purchase that instead. It is also considerably cheaper, so yes, I'd say have at it and enjoy.
